Crazy Quilts for Modern Times: The Tradition Continues
June 20–August 20
The History Museum announces a new exhibit for the summer months. Putting together the old with the new, handmade quilts will decorate the halls of the Center. In association with The Georgia Quilt Council, Inc and the Mountain Laurel Quilters’ Guild, treasured old quilts and new, contemporary design quilts will splash color and artistry throughout the halls of the old School.
The Georgia Quilt Council, Inc is providing a traveling exhibit titled “Crazy Quilts for Modern Times: The Tradition Continues” as the basis of this display. This exhibit has been touring the state since 2007 and SNCA and the History Museum are fortunate and pleased to be hosting the exhibit this summer.
Because the quilters looked back to the roots of crazy quilting in their use of silks, extravagant trims and intricate handwork, the title of this exhibit reflects this heritage. The result is a blend of traditional crazy quilts, side-by-side with modern interpretations and old time craftsmanship.
Also included in the display will be quilts made by members of the Mountain Laurel Quilters’ Guild. The quilts will vary from traditional pieced and appliquéd quilts to contemporary art quilts. The Mountain Laurel Quilters’ Guild meets in Clarkesville and has members from approximately 6 Georgia Counties as well as from North and South Carolina.
Additional displays of Antique quilts can be seen inside the History Museum and we thank our local residents for their contributions to our program.
This is an exhibit that should not be missed. Leisurely stroll the halls and the History Museum and enjoy the colorful and beautifully crafted quilts that these talented people are sharing with us. Our thanks go out to The Georgia Quilt Council and to the Mountain Laurel Quilters’ Guild.
